Immigration Policy, Assimilation of Immigrants and Natives' Sentiments towards Immigrants: Evidence from 12 Oecd-countries

چکیده
As in the U.S. and Canada, migration is a controversial issue in Europe. For much too long, policy concerns are largely driven by political motives. Hence, it is not surprising that migration policies are mainly based on political objectives. This paper argues that this approach has detrimental effects on assimilation and the sentiments of natives. It first reviews the assimilation literature in economics and the policy approaches taken in Europe and among the traditional immigration countries. Second, a new analysis of individual data from the OECD countries studies sentiments concerning immigration and the determinants of these sentiments. The paper concludes with a consistent picture: Governments in Europe should choose migrants more according to the needs of the labor markets. This would moderate social tensions about migration and contribute to a better economic performance of the respective countries. In that, both political and economic objectives of policy-makers would be met.

We test whether immigrants are more prone to support terror than natives because of lower opportunity costs, using the international World Values Survey data. We show that, in general, economically, politically and socially non-integrated persons are more likely to accept using violence for achieving political goals, consistent with the economic model of crime. We also find evidence for the des...

In the past 12 years Spain has undergone one of the fastest and most intense immigration processes of any developed country. From a demographic point of view, this process has contributed to positive population growth: without it, growth would have been zero. In addition, it has helped to “rejuvenate” an aging Spanish population, as the average age of incoming immigrants is considerably lower t...

Most previously used measures of immigrant labor market assimilation will be biased if there is non-random emigration of immigrants. We use longitudinal data on immigration to Sweden 1970-1990 to examine the extent and pattern of immigrant emigration and its consequences for measures of assimilation. Large fractions of the immigrants leave the host country shortly after arrival; within five yea...

The Impact of Immigration on the Well-Being of Natives This paper examines the effect of immigration directly on the overall utility of natives. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper to explore such nexus. Combining information from the German Socio-Economic Panel dataset with detailed local labour market characteristics for the period 1997 to 2007, we investigate how changes in...
